Livermore, ME – Coombs Motorsports has purchased a late model from Austin Theriault Racing of Fort Kent, ME. The car is the same one that Coombs Motorsports ran in 2009 and sold to Steve Theriault in August of that year. Coombs Motorsports plans to run the 2011 season at home track, Oxford Plains Speedway.

The 2011 Coombs Motorsports late model will feature a new number, 27ME. The number 27 has been a part of the Coombs Motorsports history since driver, Doug Coombs, placed it on his first racing snowmobile. From 1994 to 2002 the team ran 27ME on its Legends Car amassing dozens of top three finishes, three state points’ championships, and the 1999 track championship at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. With this winning record the team is looking forward to the 2011 season with the 27ME late model.

Coombs Motorsports will also be running the new Ford S347JR crate engine built by Ford Racing as part of the Ford Racing Blue Oval Challenge. The Ford crate engine has shown great promise in the past season capturing many wins including the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and the Milkbowl at Thunder Road Speedbowl. At Oxford Plains, past champion Jeff Taylor, dominated the Late Model division with three wins. With these promising 2010 performances by other Ford Racing members Coombs Motorsports hopes to join in Ford’s winning tradition and drive the 27ME Late Model back into Oxford Plains Speedway victory lane.

Looking forward to seeing the 27ME back on the track? The first race will be May 15’th when the American Canadian Tour comes to Oxford Plains Speedway for the ACT 150. For more information check out the Coombs Motorsports Facebook Fan Page at http://www.facebook.com/coombsmotorsports.

It’s that time of year once again. The best race teams in the North East and Canada are preparing their late models to attempt to qualify for this Sunday’s TD Banknorth 250. The wheels are waiting in anticipation of new rubber, the team is energized, and the car is ready for its chance to prove itself.

Coombs Motorsports will be back at Oxford Plains on Saturday to get its chance to compete in New England’s premier short track event. The team raced a limited schedule this season to prepare for this race. Despite the schedule and small crew Coombs Motorsports has finished in the top ten in all of its 2009 races.

As anyone who has tried to qualify for the 250 knows, it’s not how good you are it’s how good you pick your qualifying spot. This year the honor of drawing goes to Doug Coombs’ daughter, Allison.

Coombs Motorsports is also dedicating this weekend’s qualifying attempt to Coombs’ father, Charlie, who passed away suddenly in December. This season Charlie’s name has remained on the car with a signature gold ribbon next to it.

Livermore, ME, June 22, 2009 – Multi-tasking was the theme of the night for Coombs Motorsports Saturday at Oxford Plains Speedway. With their spotter caught at Bike Week the Coombs Motorsports team members stepped up to bring home an eighth place finish.

The 57 team ran in the top three of the first and second practices. For the first time since the start of the season, the team started and finished fifth in the high point heat with other weekly Late Model standouts.

In the feature, the Coombs Motorsports team started in the 15’th position. On lap 10, contact between the eventual winner, Nick Brown, and Ron Charpentier caused the three wide field to check up and sent another competitor spinning between turns three and four. To avoid the wreck Coombs drove to the top of the track, dropping a tire off the asphalt in the process and spinning out as well.

After being considered part of the caution, Coombs restarted in the 18’th position. When the race resumed, Coombs stayed patient and waited for the slower cars to clear the outside groove. Once he had racing room Coombs began chasing down the front pack, led by Brown, passing three cars on lap 28 to crack the top ten.

Coombs would once again be hampered by a slower car driven by Jeff White, but would manage to gain and maintain the eighth position for the last two laps of the race.

The Coombs Motorsports team will be back in action on Thursday July 2 and Saturday July 4. The races will be the final tune-up for the Coombs Motorsports team before attempting to qualify for the 36’th annual TD Banknorth 250. Livermore, ME, June 15, 2009 – A two week break from competition paid off for Coombs Motorsports on Saturday night with a sixth place finish in Late Model action at Oxford Plains Speedway.

The 57 team started off well posting sixth and second on the speed charts in the first two practices of the day. With the balance of the car to driver Doug Coombs’ liking, the team sat out the final practice.

Points set the drivers up for their heat races, placing the Coombs Motorsports team fifth in the first heat. In the ten-lap shootout Coombs picked up two more spots finishing third in the qualifier, giving the team its first top three of the season.

The late model feature was the last on the night and provided spectators with a great show of 40 caution-free laps. Missing last week’s race put Coombs toward the back of the 21-car field in the 15’th position. When the green flag dropped the back of the pack knotted together, forcing Coombs to run the inside groove. Once the melee thinned out Coombs drove the 57 to the outside groove and began picking his way through the traffic.

Coombs made his way to fifth and held the position until the right front began to chatter on lap 37 allowing Travis Adams to pass him for a top five finish. Coombs still posted a season best finish of sixth, providing the team with momentum for Double T Fence night this Saturday, June 20.

Livermore, ME, June 1, 2009 – The Coombs Motorsports Ford Fusion was back in action this Saturday at Oxford Plains Speedway. After overcoming a rough heat and slow cars in the feature Coombs piloted the 57 into a solid ninth place finish.

The day started off well for the Coombs Motorsports team running consistently in the top ten for two practice sessions. In the final practice, the team chose to scuff race tires and ended up 12’th on the speedcharts.

This was also the second week that Coombs Motorsports had to start at the rear of the field for not racing last season. This placed the team deep in the first heat with many new drivers. On the start, the car running in the third spot lost control and spun in the middle of turn two. Most of the drivers checked up to avoid the wreck, except the 48 driven by Kenny Harrison who made hard contact with rear end of the Coombs Motorsports Ford.

On lap three, the 57 made its move to the outside, but the position would be short lived as another car forced a three-wide situation in turn one sending Coombs off the track. Since the team would have to start from the rear of the feature anyway, Coombs elected to bring it in and not deal with the poor driving exhibited in the heat.

Coombs Motorsports started the feature in the 15’th position. Once the green flag fell, it was obvious that the 27 driven by Jason Larrabee was holding up the entire back half of the field. Larrabee also seemed out of control letting the car slide up into the third groove of the track on both the front and back straights of the speedway. After letting off once as Larrabee chopped down into turn one, Coombs decided he would make his move on the inside of the 27. Coombs was up to the door of the 27 when Larrabee decided he wanted the inside. Larrabee made contact with the front of the 57 and immediately lost control of his car relegating him to the back of the field.

With the slow cars out of the way, Coombs set his sights on the front runners. He reached Donnie Wentworth and Shawn Knight within a few laps and set up to pass them on the outside. Coombs made easy work of Wentworth and tried to overcome the 25 of Knight.

Coombs and Wentworth soon found themselves held up behind the 25. Wentworth would make the first move clearing Coombs, who slid up behind him to help overcome Knight. When the checkered flag flew, Wentworth was the only one who could overcome Knight placing Coombs in the ninth position for the second consecutive week.

Coombs Motorsports will be taking the weekend off from racing but will be back in action at Oxford Plains Speedway on June 13.
