LIVERMORE, Maine, May 25, 2009 – Coombs Motorsports proved a one-year absence from Late Model racing action at Oxford Plains Speedway (OPS) has not slowed them down on Saturday night with a ninth place finish.

The day seemed to begin well when driver, Doug Coombs, pulled number 3 for the heat races, but track officials informed him that since he did not race at OPS last season he had to start from the back for two weeks. Once the team got the car on the track poor starting position did not seem to matter as the black and gold Ford Fusion consistently ran in the top five of the speed charts.

Though practice looked promising, starting in the back of the first heat race would prove to be a challenge with the 57 being mired among slow cars taking up both the inside and outside grooves. With nowhere to go, the team accepted the ninth place finish but knew the car had more to show during the feature.

The 57 started 18’th in the feature and as Coombs made the move to the outside groove on lap 2 the rear end of the car broke loose causing the car to spin and bringing out the first caution. Coombs mentioned on the radio that he did not know what happened but did not think that anyone had hit him. The car soon settled into a rhythm and stuck to the outside groove.

As the laps progressed, the 57 got faster on the outside while its competitors simply could not hold their cars out there any longer and the Fusion made its charge to the front. Lap 28 brought out the third and final caution of the night with Coombs sitting in ninth spot. After making his way to the outside once again, Coombs made one more try for the top five but soon felt the right front tire begin to chatter.

Coombs maintained his position on the outside as the last few laps wore down and brought the 57 Ford Fusion home in ninth position.

The team will race again this Saturday May 30 at Oxford Plains Speedway. The front gates will open at 5:30PM and racing will begin at 6:30PM. For more race information, please visit:
